OpenAI’s Superalignment Team Reveals Approach to Controlling AI Models

OpenAI’s Superalignment research unit has developed a methodology for supervising super-intelligent AI systems, according to a report.

“A research paper released by OpenAI today touts results from experiments designed to test a way to let an inferior AI model guide the behavior of a much smarter one without making it less smart,” WIRED reports. “Although the technology involved is far from surpassing the flexibility of humans, the scenario was designed to stand in for a future time when humans must work with AI systems more intelligent than themselves.”

OpenAI also said it partnered with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt to offer $10 million in grants to researchers developing AI control methods. The startup previously pledged to dedicate 20 percent of its computing power to the Superalignment unit.

“AGI is very fast approaching,” OpenAI research told WIRED. “We're gonna see superhuman models, they're gonna have vast capabilities, and they could be very, very dangerous, and we don't yet have the methods to control them.”

Grimes Launches AI Plush Toy Collection

Pop singer Grimes has teamed up with startup Curio to launch a collection of AI-powered plush toys. The toys, which operate on OpenAI ChatGPT’s models, comes in three versions: Grok, Grem, and Gabbo. Grok, which has no relation to Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot , speaks with a digitized version of Grimes' voice.

“The toy itself has WiFi and Bluetooth along with a speaker, microphone and accelerometer (no cameras or screens) and connects with a mobile app where parents can control settings and view past conversations,” Axios reports.

"We are looking for the more pioneering families willing to go on this journey with us," CEO Misha Sallee said. "If you are scared, maybe wait a little bit."

"I do view this as the very early innings of the robotics wave of AI," he added.

The toys come with a $99 price tag and are now for pre-order.

Putin Confronted by AI Deepfake of Himself

Russian President Vladimir Putin was questioned during his annual end-of-the-year conference by an apparent AI deepfake of Putin himself. The deepfake was created by a Russian citizen who claimed to be a student from Saint Petersburg and asked the real Putin about rumors that he uses body doubles. The deepfake also asked the Russian leader about implications of AI on society.

"Vladimir Vladimirovich, hello. I would like to ask you, 'Is it true that you have many doppelgangers?'" the student asked, according to a translation by the British press. "How do you view the dangers that artificial intelligence and neural networks bring into our lives?"

A surprised Putin replied: I see you may resemble me and speak with my voice, but only one person must be like me and speak with my voice, and that will be me!"

"By the way, this is my first twin. My twin number one," he added.
