Elon Musk Predicts AI will Invent Own Technologies

Elon Musk discussed the current state of AI and what the future could hold for the technology during a Twitter Spaces with investor Cathie Wood. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that AI is still behind humans in its ability to do physics and invent new technologies. Yet, that may soon change, he predicted.
“Computers have not yet discovered any fundamental physics, but humans have discovered a lot of fundamental physics,” Musk said. “Computers have not yet invented a useful technology, but humans have invented many useful technologies.”
“What’s coming is AI understanding fundamental physics and AI inventing new technologies,” he added.
Musk also plugged his own AI, saying that xAI’s Grok is the “funniest” chatbot on the market.
“If you ask Grok to provide a vulgar roast, it’s pretty good,” he said."

Google Plans to Replace Some Ad Sales Jobs with AI?

(credit: ThisIsEngineering)
Google plans to "consolidate staff” inside its ad sales department by shifting workers into other units, citing the introduction of Google’s AI tools, which has automated various tasks, according to a report. The move, which could result in layoffs, was announced during a meeting with the ad sales team last week.
Ars Technica reports, “One ad tool, Google's Performance Max (or "PMax" for short), got a generative AI boost after May's announcement and can now ‘create custom assets and scale them in a few clicks.’ First, it helps advertisers decide if an ad should be in places like YouTube, Search, Discover, Gmail, Maps, or banner ads on third-party sites. Then, it can just make the ad content, thanks to generative AI that can scan your website for material.”
Some employees expect the changes to go into effect as soon as next month. As of last year, Google employed 30,000 ad sales people. The tech giant did not comment publicly on the development, which was first reported by The Information.

U.S. to Collect Info on Chinese Manufacturers Amid Tariff Talk

(credit: ABL Circuits)
The Commerce Department is collecting information on Chinese semiconductor makers as part of an effort to better understand the U.S.’s reliance on chips from the Asian superpower. Early next year, the Bureau of Industry and Security will survey 100 companies across the auto and defense industry to gain a deeper perspective on how they acquire the chips.
“Over the last few years, we’ve seen potential signs of concerning practices from the PRC to expand their firms’ legacy chip production and make it harder for US companies to compete,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in reference to China. The survey will be designed to “inform our next steps,” the official added.
Bloomberg News reports, “Those steps could include tariffs or other trade tools to counter China’s push, said the official, who asked not to be identified discussing the administration’s thinking. The House Select Committee on China recently urged the US to impose legacy chip tariffs in a bipartisan report.”
The Chinese government criticized the U.S.’s measures, saying they violate “the principles of a market economy and fair competition.”
“Using trade issues as a tool or weapon violates the principles of a market economy and fair competition, and eventually damages the interests of the US and the whole world,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said. “The US should abide by the economic trade rules and the principles of the market economy and create conditions for US-China economic cooperation.”
